Argaka Museum
In the peaceful village of Argaka, one will find a museum which has ancient hand made, wood carving by Mr. Kallasdou Kleitos.
From the age of 18 to 65 Kleitos, now 83 years old, worked as a shoemaker and a farmer. Kleitos discovered his hidden talent for working with wood, at the age of 65 when most are thinking of retiring.
For the past 18 years he has created unique working models of equipment that was used in farming, building, household items, olive presses, corn grinders and many other objects. As Kleitos has two daughters, all items have been duplicated, one for each.
Kleitos wanted to share his knowledge and now there are hundreds of wooden crafted items on display in a museum.
All of the items created where hand made and each has its own unique design. Most of the miniature wood work items were carefully created to ensure that they are in working order. Only wood is used for each model, no other material such as metal or iron was used.
There are over 150 items to be seen. A few items that really stood out include: 3 replicas of the large Krasiaras, vessels dating back to 1500BC which held up to 200 litres of wine. Two cotton separators, one was for winter and the other for summer.
A sand timer, which has the number 1,270,653 carved into the wood. That is the number of grains of sand contained in the timer. Live size kitchen utensils including knives, forks, spoons and a bread box. A miniature horse ridding saddle.
The 3 Krasiaras models will presented to the office of the president of Cyprus, Greece and the European office. Each president will receive a model but it will be stipulated as a gift for the office, so it will not leave the office if or when a new president is elected.
To truly appreciate modern development one must visit this museum. Mr. Kallasdou Kleitos is a talented man with a passion that has developed into a befit for all. His grandson, John will be pleased to show you around the museum. To ensure he is available it would be advisable to contact John before hand on +357 77772244.
After your trip to the museum, one can enjoy refreshments or even a meal at Flyagain Irish Bar.
