Rugby is a sport that is fairy new to the Cypriots but fast becoming an accepted sport.

There is a national Cypriot rugby team which invited to participate in the Inaugural Beirut International Ten a Side Rugby Union Tournament at the Jamhour stadium in Beirut. This was the first time that Cyprus had sent a rugby team abroad and the results were highly impressive. The team returned with the victory trophy, Cible de Pierre Fabre Trophy which was awarded to them by the Lebanese Minister of Sport.

The scores were:
Cyprus vs. Cairo 36 - 5
Cyprus vs. Jordan 17 - 5
Cyprus vs. Beirut 12 - 10
Cyprus vs. Barbarians 36 - 0
Cyprus vs. Jamhour 36 - 0
Cyprus vs. Beirut (final) 13 - 12

In 2003 Paphos established their own team. This team is called the Paphos Tigers RFC and they are the first independent team to form in Cyprus.

This team has impressed the Paphos community with the exceptional amount of victories against other teams that have better facilities and equipment. The reason for this is that all the team members are focused and passionate about the sport.

The club was founded by a group of South Africans that used to play for their province back home. Even though the team consists mainly of South Africans and English members there are other nations as well as a few local Cypriots.

When the team first began competing the spectators consisted only of the team member's friends and families. Now there is a large crowed that support this team at almost every game they play which take place at the Cypria Maris Soccer Field.

A message from the Paphos Tigers: "Our aim is to expand the game of rugby and to bring the game to people who have played, or have been involved with rugby in one way or another. These people can help us reach out to other people who have never played, and offer them an opportunity to learn and find out what rugby is truly about. Not only on the pitch, but also off it."

At these matches not only will one see an entraining game of rugby but the people and environment is friendly. Many friends have been made and the team and its spectators gradually become a big family all entwined one way or another.
